It was compiled by Dr. Azriel Gat, who won the Pritzker Prize in Architecture in 2001, for his work on historical preservation. The list was originally published in the New York Times back on April 10th 1995, which was before 9/11 and before Twitter became popular. 1. The first president of the United States was inaugurated in New York City in 1789. 2. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 almost doubled the size of America without firing a single shot. The $15 million deal more than doubled the territory of the United States, although it brought with it a troublesome new neighbor in Napoleonic France. 3. At 43 inches, Montana has the longest average snowfall in America (New York gets an average of 37 inches). 4. Alaska has more coastline than all of the other 49 states combined (14,635 miles or 23,462 kilometers). 5. In 1883, the first Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to American author Washington Irving. 6. In 1903, a 26-foot tall portrait of Jefferson Davis that had been commissioned by the Confederacy was torn from its pedestal by a mob that mistook it for a statue of Jesus Christ. 7. In 1912, President Taft's nephew's pet pigeon fell from a window and hit him in the head. The bird died two days later. 8. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson famously wore pantsuits for eight years in an attempt to make America "honest with itself". 9. Americans are the only country that has a national anthem written for it. "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written by Francis Scott Key shortly after the War of 1812. 10. In 1965, this country's population was 2,500,000 fewer than it is today. The United States grew from its founding to its largest territory ever in 1803, when it expanded from 13 states to 15 including Texas and California. 11. The highest point in the United States is Mount McKinley in Alaska at 20,320 feet above sea level (4,625 meters). 12. The only continent with a coastline longer than America's is Africa at 12,959 miles/20,228 kilometers long. 13. The United States has the highest percentage of immigrants in the world (13 percent) and is also one of two countries that allows birthright citizenship. 14. The tallest living man in America today is Robert Wadlow. He was 8 feet and 11 inches (2.72 meters) tall and weighed 490 pounds (222 kilograms). 15. The only European capital to be founded by English-speaking colonists was Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, which later became the first permanent English settlement in North America.
